10 Areas to Consider for Families Who Value Education

From top-rated elementary schools to strong high schools, Brock University and Niagara College, Niagara offers families plenty of options when it comes to education.

As summer winds down and backpacks, lunch boxes and school buses return to the streets, many Niagara families are thinking about more than just the first day of school.

They’re thinking about the next five years.

Maybe you’re looking for your first family home. Maybe your kids are moving from elementary school into high school. Or perhaps you’re considering a move to Niagara and want to know which communities offer access to strong schools and educational opportunities.

The good news?

Niagara has a wide variety of communities where education can be an important part of the lifestyle.

A quick note on school rankings: School rankings are only one piece of the puzzle. The Fraser Institute rankings referenced in this article are based primarily on standardized academic indicators and EQAO results. School boundaries, programs, transportation and individual family needs should also be considered when choosing a home. Always confirm the current school attendance boundary directly with the appropriate school board before purchasing.

5 Niagara Areas to Consider for Elementary Schools

1. Grimsby

If you’re looking for a community with a small-town feel and strong elementary-school options, Grimsby deserves a spot near the top of the list.

The latest Fraser Institute-based data show several Grimsby elementary schools performing strongly compared with schools across Ontario.

Park Public received a 9.8/10 rating, while Nelles scored 9.4/10 and Smith scored 9.1/10. St. Joseph also posted a 9.0/10 rating.

That gives families multiple options within one community rather than relying on a single standout school.

And Grimsby itself offers plenty beyond the classroom: access to the Niagara Escarpment, Lake Ontario, trails, parks and a growing collection of family-oriented neighbourhoods.

Real estate takeaway: Grimsby can be particularly appealing to families looking for a suburban or small-town lifestyle while remaining within commuting distance of Hamilton and the rest of Niagara.

2. Fonthill & Pelham

For families looking for a quieter community in the heart of Niagara, Fonthill and Pelham are worth a serious look.

Fonthill’s elementary options include A.K. Wigg, which recorded a 9.2/10 rating in the latest Fraser-based rankings, and Glynn A. Green, which scored 8.7/10.

The community also benefits from having E.L. Crossley Secondary School right in Fonthill, creating an appealing education path for families with children at different stages.

E.L. Crossley received a 7.7/10 rating and ranked in approximately the top 16% of Ontario secondary schools in the 2025 Fraser Institute report.

Real estate takeaway: Pelham offers something many families want: a community atmosphere, larger lots in some neighbourhoods, access to parks and trails, and schools that can keep children close to home throughout much of their school years.

3. St. Catharines: Glenridge & Glendale

For families who want access to both strong schools and the amenities of a larger city, Glenridge and Glendale in St. Catharines are particularly interesting.

The area is home to Oakridge Public School, which scored 9.6/10 in the latest 2025 Fraser-based rankings. Power Glen also scored 9.5/10, while Westdale scored 9.3/10.

The location also puts families close to Brock University, shopping, recreation, trails and many of the amenities found throughout south St. Catharines.

Real estate takeaway: Glenridge and Glendale can be a great fit for families who want a balance between established neighbourhoods, schools, recreation and proximity to post-secondary education.

4. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls may be best known as a tourism destination, but there are also some impressive educational options throughout the city.

The latest rankings include several Niagara Falls elementary schools near the top of the provincial list.

Kate S. Durdan received a 10.0/10 rating and was ranked #1 among the 3,052 elementary schools included in the 2025 Fraser report. St. Vincent de Paul and Father Hennepin each received 9.9/10, while Orchard Park scored 9.8/10 and Simcoe Street scored 9.4/10.

That’s a pretty impressive collection of elementary-school results.

Of course, Niagara Falls is a large and diverse city, so families should pay close attention to the specific school boundary associated with any property they are considering.

Real estate takeaway: Niagara Falls provides a broad range of housing options, from established family neighbourhoods to newer developments, while offering families access to several highly rated elementary schools.

5. Port Colborne

Don’t overlook Port Colborne.

For families who want more space and a smaller-community lifestyle, Port Colborne offers some surprisingly strong elementary-school results.

Steele Street Public School received a 9.5/10 rating and ranked #56 out of 3,052 Ontario elementary schools. Oakwood scored 8.8/10.

That makes Port Colborne an interesting option for families who may be looking for a little more value or space while still wanting access to strong educational options.

Real estate takeaway: If you’re willing to look beyond Niagara’s largest cities, Port Colborne can offer an interesting combination of schools, community, waterfront lifestyle and housing options.

5 Niagara Areas to Consider for High School

As children get older, the school conversation changes.

Families start thinking about academic programs, extracurricular activities, athletics, commuting, post-secondary preparation and eventually university or college.

Here are five Niagara communities worth putting on your radar.

1. Fonthill – E.L. Crossley Secondary School

We’ve already mentioned Fonthill, and there’s a good reason to bring it up again.

E.L. Crossley Secondary School is one of the stronger-performing high schools in the Niagara area according to the latest Fraser-based data.

It received a 7.7/10 rating, placing it approximately in the top 16% of Ontario secondary schools. The school has also shown an improving five-year trend.

For families with children approaching high school, having a strong secondary school right in the community can be a major consideration.

2. St. Catharines – Glenridge

St. Catharines offers several secondary-school options, but the Glenridge area stands out because of its combination of schools, amenities and proximity to Brock University.

Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School received a 7.4/10 rating and ranked #150 out of 747 Ontario secondary schools in the latest report.

The same broader area also provides access to Oakridge Public School for younger students and puts families close to Brock University and Canada Games Park.

Real estate takeaway: This is one of those locations where the education story can continue from elementary school through post-secondary education without necessarily leaving the neighbourhood.

3. St. Catharines – West & Central

Another option for St. Catharines families is the broader west and central part of the city.

Eden High School recorded a 7.8/10 rating, while St. Francis scored 7.5/10. Holy Cross scored 7.3/10 and Governor Simcoe scored 7.2/10.

That gives families multiple secondary-school options depending on their school board, address and individual circumstances.

As always, school boundaries matter — two homes only a few streets apart can potentially fall into different attendance areas.

4. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls also has several strong secondary-school options.

St. Paul High School received an 8.0/10 rating in the latest rankings and ranked #86 out of 747 Ontario secondary schools. A.N. Myer scored 7.6/10, while St. Michael scored 7.1/10.

Combined with the city’s strong elementary-school results, this makes Niagara Falls an area worth exploring for families who want to remain in one community as their children move through the school system.

5. Grimsby

Grimsby rounds out our high-school list.

Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School received a 7.1/10 rating in the latest Fraser-based data.

But the bigger appeal may be the overall education picture.

With several highly rated elementary schools, a strong community atmosphere and access to Hamilton and Niagara, Grimsby can make sense for families who want to put down roots for the long term.

And Then There’s Brock University

For families with older children, Niagara’s education story doesn’t end at Grade 12.

One of the region’s biggest advantages is having Brock University right here in St. Catharines.

Brock University offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate programs across seven academic faculties. Its academic offerings span areas including business, education, health sciences, humanities, mathematics and science, and social sciences.

Brock also has a significant experiential-learning and co-op focus, giving students opportunities to connect classroom learning with future careers.

For families, that creates an interesting real estate advantage.

A child can potentially grow up in Niagara, attend elementary and secondary school locally, and then attend university without having to immediately leave the region.

That can mean less disruption for families — and for homeowners, it can also make proximity to Brock an important consideration when purchasing a property.

Don’t Forget Niagara College

University isn’t the only post-secondary option in Niagara.

Niagara College has two major campuses: the Welland Campus and the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Welland Campus is home to programs and schools focused on areas including health sciences, nursing, justice, fitness, media, technology and trades.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake campus has a different academic focus, with schools covering business, community services, culinary arts, environment and horticulture, hospitality and tourism, and wine, beer and spirits.

Niagara College currently offers more than 100 diploma, graduate certificate, apprenticeship and bachelor’s-degree programs across its campuses.

That variety is another reason Niagara can be an appealing place to raise a family.

From kindergarten to college, there are educational opportunities throughout the region.

What Does This Mean for Niagara Homebuyers?

If you’re buying a home with children (or planning to have children in the future) schools should absolutely be part of your decision-making process.

But they shouldn’t be the only factor.

When we’re helping families find a home, we encourage them to think about:

School boundaries
Which school is the property actually assigned to? Don’t rely solely on a listing description or a map online. Confirm the current attendance boundary.

Elementary AND secondary schools
A great elementary school is important, but what happens five or ten years down the road?

Commute times
Consider where parents work, how students will get to school and whether the location works for the entire family.

Parks and recreation
Schools are only one part of a child’s daily life. Trails, parks, sports facilities, libraries and community programs matter too.

Post-secondary opportunities
If you’re planning to stay in Niagara long-term, Brock University and Niagara College add another layer to the region’s educational appeal.

The home itself
At the end of the day, the best school doesn’t make up for a house that doesn’t work for your family, your budget or your lifestyle.

Back-to-school season is a great reminder that where you live can play a big role in how your family lives.

From the strong elementary-school results found in communities like Grimsby, Fonthill, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Port Colborne, to secondary-school options throughout the region, Niagara offers families plenty to consider.

And when your kids eventually graduate, the options don’t stop.

With Brock University in St. Catharines and Niagara College campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake, families can find educational opportunities right here in Niagara at almost every stage of life.
