HISTORY

Known as “Rose City” and “Where Rails and Water Meet,” Welland has a lot of history behind its reputation. Welland is known as Rose City because when the name was chosen in the early 1920s, the area was a hub for locally grown roses. As for rail and water, Welland’s location in the Niagara Region happens to be where two key types of transit met: waterways like the Welland Canal and a series of important railways connecting Canada and the United States. Before it was Welland, the settlement along the Welland Canal was known as Merrittsville. When the town was incorporated in 1858, the name was changed to Welland.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Welland Amphitheatre

Located in Merritt Park, this 750 seat, natural amphitheatre was cut into the east bank of the Welland Recreational Waterway to serve as permanent seating for local musical and theatrical events that take place on the water. The stone stepped amphitheatre overlooks a floating stage on the water and the beautiful scenery of the Old Welland Canal. Summer music festivals are held at this location every year in the summer months.

Welland Farmers’ Market

The Welland Farmers’ Market is a year-round staple event taking place every Saturday. Vendors from around the region gather in Welland for an indoor and outdoor market to sell produce from local farms, artisans and wineries.

Bridge 13

Bridge 13 is located in the heart of downtown Welland. The bridge lights up with brilliant LED lights every evening and also lights up with a variety of colours to commemorate specific celebrations and events. The Bridge has become a muse for local artists and photographers. Visit Bridge 13 to inspire and celebrate our beautiful city. Be sure to grab lunch or dinner at Taris on the Water, A wine country bistro beautifully situated overlooking the Bridge!
