2022 will usher in kitchen trends that will encourage a minimalist look, the comeback of wood finishes, the integration of vintage and antique elements and bold pops of colour.
Although there will still be a place for the all-white kitchen that has dominated design trends for the past few years, design professionals may recommend that those stark spaces be mellowed with warm accents and decor.
The following design trends are expected to dominate kitchens in the New Year:
Minimalist Style:
This trend has been popular for several years and does not apply only to the kitchen, but rather to the whole home. This year, the minimalist focus revolves around the cabinet handles, or lack of. Kitchens this year will continue to be elegant and simple and without handles. This trend is referred to as “The handleless effect,” which in our opinion, lends itself best to ultra-modern kitchens with flat, high gloss cabinetry.
Wood Finishes:
Wood is making a comeback after several years of being deemed “out of fashion.” This coming year is not so much about returning to a traditional “wood” kitchen” as it is about re-integrating wood grain back into the design. The revival of wood will welcome the use of paler wood tones, including ash and natural wood finish. The integration of these woods will combine to create an overall brighter, more neutral look. Synthetic wood materials are also being embraced this year, which may make for a more affordable and durable renovation.
Adding Vintage and Antiques into a Modern Kitchen:
Perhaps the increase in time spent at home over the past year has created a desire for a warmer, more comfortable feel. Since the pandemic has begun, people have become less interested in creating a “show home” and more interested in creating a warm and inviting environment for their families to enjoy. Integrating unique, imperfect, vintage and antique items instantly warms the space and eliminates the “cookie cutter” look that has become all together too common in recent years.
Bright Pops of Colour:
Bold, contrasting colour palettes add pops of personality and charm. People are having more fun with colour as they are spending more time in their homes. Bottom cabinets and centre islands are being painted in rich hues and in a variety of finishes including gloss and matte. Accent walls will also stage a comeback while colourful mosaic backsplashes, brightly coloured light shades and eye-popping display pottery and furniture will dominate kitchens this year.
Remember, trends always evolve. If you just installed a bright white kitchen with gleaming white counters, don’t give it a second thought. It is still beautiful and if you are happy and content with the look and functionality of the space then it is perfect for you. Although trends guide our design decisions, our choices for our homes should always be made with comfortability and our families’ needs and wants in mind. If you feel pressure to be “in vogue,” add colourful accents or a few vintage or antique pieces to the space. We can’t possibly keep up with all the new trends and we all know it will change again next year.
