The Covid-19 Effect: The Pandemic’s Affect on 2021 Home Design Trends
Covid Affect on home Design Trends

Author

The pandemic has created a tsunami of change with respect to how we live and work, and ultimately, how we relate to and use the space in our homes. In 2020, most people focused on reinventing their outdoor entertainment areas.  This year, as we adapted to being at home more often and living a slower paced lifestyle, we began to rethink how we use our living quarters.

DESIGN TRENDS OF 2021

GO GREEN

From indoor planters to artificial plants and trees, people are eager to add green to their homes. Green is a warm colour and it encourages our connection to nature and the outdoors. The popularity of the whites and greys that have dominated design trends for the past few years seems to be waning as people turn their attention to warmer, more comforting colours.

ONE-OF-A-KIND-POOLS

If 2020 was the year that we turned our attention to reinventing our outdoor, entertainment spaces, the priority for 2021 seems to be creating one-of-a-kind pool styles, shapes and designs. As more people plan to staycation, there has been an increase among homeowners looking to install plunge, lap, & infinity pools.

DEDICATED SCHOOL AND WORK SPACE

Before March 2020, we couldn’t imagine how the COVID-19 pandemic would fundamentally transform our relationships with our homes. Since the initial quarantine, many homeowners have incorporated beefier home offices with larger work surfaces, comfortable, ergonomic chairs and increased storage to support heavier, daily usage.  The youngest members of our households also require their own learning spaces.  Many families have transitioned away from the traditional model of homework at the kitchen table toward purposefully designated, quiet spaces that allow for learning with minimal distractions.

MULTI-PURPOSE ROOMS

With people spending more time at home, multi-purpose rooms have become essential. These flexible areas may incorporate several uses in one small footprint. A workout room may double as a guest room or an office or a large walk-in closet may be converted to a small remote learning nook.  It is important to remember that if you want to create a multi-purpose space, flexible furniture is a must.  Murphy beds, folding furniture and nesting tables are all gaining in popularity this year.
